Join Our New Imber Ward

#JoinOurPeople and be part of something new

Imber Ward scheduled to open in Spring 2024.

A new state-of-the-art ward with 24 additional beds, incorporating a mixture of four-bed bays and side rooms is due to open this Spring. Our new Imber Ward was given its name by popular votes from staff, as a tribute to the village taken over by the military to train American troops ahead of the Liberation of Europe in 1943, the same year as the US Army Field Hospital opened on Odstock Road.

The ward is part of a new £14m environmentally sustainable building, with the fitting out of the ward is being generously supported by the Stars Appeal, and we’re looking for new team members to join us.

By providing extra bed capacity, Imber Ward will underpin the hospital’s elective recovery programme. The extra beds mean elderly care patients will be cared for in a dedicated space, in turn this will allow our surgical beds to be better utilised to deliver much-needed elective care such as day surgery.

Join us in creating the ward of the future!

We would like to identify our new team members before this exemplar ward opens and seek enthusiastic, forward-thinking people to join us on our ground-breaking journey as we shape the future of elderly healthcare.

As a member of this ward, you’ll have the unique opportunity to be part of this venture right from the start. This means you can contribute your ideas, skills and expertise to help shape the ward's culture, policies and procedures. Your voice will be heard and your impact will be significant as we work together to create a unique, supportive and inclusive environment for our patients and staff.

A ‘topping out’ ceremony celebrated the completion of the concrete frame of the building. This ceremony is a tradition generally practiced in the UK, Germany, Poland and the US. Construction partner BAM’s regional director, Anthony Nagle and the Trust’s Director of Estates, Brian Johnson, completed the ceremony by trowelling a section of concrete which will be cured (set) and incorporated within the building to mark this occasion.

In historic times the event would have included the placement of a tree sapling atop a new building to ward off tree-based spirits displaced during the construction. (October 2023)

Our Trust has been granted permission to name the building that will house our new Imber Ward, the Elizabeth Building, in honour of the late Her Majesty the Queen, Elizabeth II. As you'll recall, in a poll of staff, the names Elizabeth and Imber came out on top.

Trust Chair Ian Green OBE said, "We are delighted to have been given permission to dedicate this new building to the memory of our late Queen, as collectively suggested by our staff. The Elizabeth Building, which includes Imber Ward, will provide elderly care in a state-of-the-art modern environment, supporting the Trust’s elective recovery programme. This marks a major milestone in our Trust’s commitment to deliver the very best compassionate, effective care."
